Introduction to Layout and Design Calli Class

Saturday 7th March.  1 – 4pm at Primrose Park, Matora Lane, Cremorne.

Words placements for a calligraphic piece of work don’t just happen. They need to be thought about (sometimes long and hard) and placed upon your writing surface in a manner which will give both your work, and your words the most impact and interest.  This may involve colour or simply be achieved by the dynamic placing of all, or part of your piece.

Three hours isn’t long enough to really come to grips with this topic, but we can at least make a start by discussing ‘stuff ‘you may never have thought about. What works? what doesn’t? Does it really matter?

Bring some words with you; a longish poem or a few paragraphs of prose and we will play with some simple design techniques to get you started. Be prepared to have fun and experiment.

You will need: HB & 2B pencils, pencil sharpener, 30 cm ruler, and your favourite square edge pens but nothing too small. If you have a 2.4 parallel pen is also great (no pointed nibs at this stage) any ink, or watercolour you like to work with plus some A3 paper, a layout pad is fine but if you want to try watercolour paper, just get something from your local $2.00 shop, try to get 180 / 200 gsm HP paper as it is smooth and writes well.

Easy Background Washes Calliclass

Saturday 2nd May.    1pm to 4pm at Primrose Park, Matora Lane, Cremorne.

Today we will play with some very easy and quick background washes that can become a background to a calligraphic piece, or turned into cards if the end result isn’t what you expected. This is a fun, play day open to all members.

You will need:  A3 or A4 watercolour 300gsm hot press paper, brand doesn’t matter, and paper from a $2.00 shop works well enough for this exercise.

A large brush is essential for applying a wash, a HAKE if you can get one but if not, a square brush at least 2.5cm wide, or a large round brush (approx. size 20) will be fine. Tube watercolours, & again they can come from a $2.00 shop (at this stage we’re not too concerned about pigment quality) but if you do have good quality paints try to limit them to series 1 for this exercise.  Some largish shallow mixing dishes, Chinese type sauce dishes about 9cm across are ideal, bring several. Two water jars, and paper towel or rags for cleaning up. A plastic cloth for the table as well please. A roll of cling film, and an old toothbrush. I will bring rock salt and urea crystals for you to use.
