WORKSHOPS

Tune into Italics
with Lexie Arlington
Saturday 15 May
also Saturday 17 July
and Saturday 16 October
10:00am–4:00pm
$55 members, $60 non-members
3 Lesson Package: $150 members, $165 non-members
All levels

This will be a series of workshops. You can come to one, two or all three workshops. It is suitable for those who have learnt a basic Italic.

Take the opportunity to concentrate on letterforms, improve and fine tune your pen skills and knowledge of Italic. It is one of the most useful and versatile calligraphic scripts. It can be written in a formal or a casual style. By exploring form, size, weight, texture and structure you will add to your ‘calligraphic repertoire’. Your compositions, will be more interesting. Incorporate your new letterforms into small calligraphic projects …

Lesson 1
ITALIC CONTRAST AND TEXTURE
Saturday 15 May 2009, 10am–4pm
This workshop will give you a chance to refresh and refine your ’Sweet Roman’. During this workshop you will revise a basic Italic script - lower and upper case. By changing ‘the basic recipe’ students will learn to create variations in tones and textures. Alter serifs, add simple flourishes and give your Italic a different ‘look’. Explore these forms and complete a small calligraphic work.

Lesson 2
COMPRESSED AND EXTENDED ITALIC

Saturday 17 July 2009, 10am–4pm
During this workshop students will explore different rhythms in Italics. You will learn compressed and extended Italic. Compression and extension of the letters will vary from slight to extreme. Students can experiment with a variety of writing tools. Have fun ‘playing’ with these new letterforms.

Lesson 3
A CALLIGRAPHIC WALL HANGING

Saturday 16 October 2009, 10am–4pm

The aim of this workshop is to produce a calligraphic wall hanging. Students will revise and fine tune the letterforms that have been taught in the previous workshops. The wall hanging will be composed of individual ‘pieces’ using Italic variations. It is suggested that all quotes be based on a theme. You have lots of time to think about this.

AN AUSTRALIAN BESTIARY
with Timothy Noad
Saturday 14–Sunday 15 August
10:00am–4:00pm
$130 members, $140 non-members
All levels

Timothy Noad is an Heraldic Artist at the College of Arms in London and also an occasional Queen’s Scribe. His expertise in designing and executing heraldic-style paintings and gilding is exemplary.

This workshop involves taking an Australian animal, bird, fish or even a plant if you like (each student will choose their own) and painting it in a stylised manner inspired by medieval bestiary illustrations, but with a decidedly contemporary twist. It brings in design, painting and gilding techniques and each person can work at their own level.

Roman Capitals Hand Made
with Graham McArthur
Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 September 2010
10am–4pm
$130 members, $140 non-members
All levels

If one wishes to learn calligraphy thoroughly as a craft a good in-depth study of Roman capitals is almost compulsory. Usually this requires a lifetime of dedication and hard work. But not for us, not this weekend. We are spending just two days of that dedication and hard work as we explore as much as we can the delights the Roman capital letter form has to offer.

We will briefly examine historical examples and their proportions and methods of construction. We will make our own Roman forms from a variety of tools including the brush, broad pen, pointed pen and pencil. Due to the tight time frame we will spend most of the workshop exploring a more contemporary approach to our calligraphy and to the Roman capital, particularly built-up and drawn forms.

Graham will be the guest speaker for our AGM this year. This will be held on Friday 17 September at 7pm, Primrose Park Art and Craft Centre. A Contemporary Approach to a Classical Idea. A warts and all step by step examination of how he approaches a calligraphic painting from idea to completion.

TEXTURE-LICOUS CARDS WITH FESTIVE FLAIR
with Julie-Ann Williams (Morning)
WORD PLAY — ARTFUL DESIGN WITH LETTERS
with Elaine Witton (Afternoon)
Saturday 6 November2010
10am–4pm
$55 members, $60 non-members
All levels

This workshop will focus on creating textured surfaces for papers, cards, gift tags, etcetera for Christmas.

Full description in September Colophon.

Note from workshop coordinator:

If you think you’ve made too many Christmas cards, I am sure Bill Crews’ organisation will be only too happy to have them for people who drop in there at Christmas.

My church gives unused cards to the homeless people who come for their Christmas lunch, and are helped write and send the cards, maybe to a family member, just to let the family know that they are alive.

This is just one idea — nursing home patients are another group who are often forgotten.
