WORKSHOPS Tune into Italics This will be a series of workshops. You can come to one, two or all three workshops. It is suitable for those who have learnt a basic Italic. Take the opportunity to concentrate on letterforms, improve and fine tune your pen skills and knowledge of Italic. It is one of the most useful and versatile calligraphic scripts. It can be written in a formal or a casual style. By exploring form, size, weight, texture and structure you will add to your ‘calligraphic repertoire’. Your compositions, will be more interesting. Incorporate your new letterforms into small calligraphic projects … Lesson 1 Lesson 2 Lesson 3 AN AUSTRALIAN BESTIARY Timothy Noad is an Heraldic Artist at the College of Arms in London and also an occasional Queen’s Scribe. His expertise in designing and executing heraldic-style paintings and gilding is exemplary. This workshop involves taking an Australian animal, bird, fish or even a plant if you like (each student will choose their own) and painting it in a stylised manner inspired by medieval bestiary illustrations, but with a decidedly contemporary twist. It brings in design, painting and gilding techniques and each person can work at their own level. Roman Capitals Hand Made We will briefly examine historical examples and their proportions and methods of construction. We will make our own Roman forms from a variety of tools including the brush, broad pen, pointed pen and pencil. Due to the tight time frame we will spend most of the workshop exploring a more contemporary approach to our calligraphy and to the Roman capital, particularly built-up and drawn forms. Graham will be the guest speaker for our AGM this year. This will be held on Friday 17 September at 7pm, Primrose Park Art and Craft Centre. A Contemporary Approach to a Classical Idea. A warts and all step by step examination of how he approaches a calligraphic painting from idea to completion. TEXTURE-LICOUS CARDS WITH FESTIVE FLAIR Full description in September Colophon. Note from workshop coordinator: If you think you’ve made too many Christmas cards, I am sure Bill Crews’ organisation will be only too happy to have them for people who drop in there at Christmas. My church gives unused cards to the homeless people who come for their Christmas lunch, and are helped write and send the cards, maybe to a family member, just to let the family know that they are alive. This is just one idea — nursing home patients are another group who are often forgotten.
